WCC President's Column
Gene Glasco-GWWCC
April, May, June 2001
The year 2001 is very much underway and
with it we have seen a refreshing change in our government's focus and
political infrastructure. George W. Bush's promises to fulfill campaign pledges
and make our armed forces an overriding concern, are becoming a
work-in-progress reality.
Our new President's foreign policy team is
impressive, and his Administration's pledge to redefine the global mission of
our military, restructure our armed forces, and re-deploy military personnel in
stations that serve vital national interests makes a lot of sense.
Gamewarden of Vietnam members who directly
served with or in support of U.S. Navy Task Force 116 operations in Vietnam
provide a vital and historic link to our military successors who now, as we
once did, must answer the call when beckoned to defend allies and resist
foreign aggression wherever and whenever it may occur.
The Navy Times, (February 19) portrayed the
tragic yet heroic end to SN David George Ouellet, who, over three decades ago,
on March 6, 1967 gave his life for his fellow crewmen on PBR-124, posthumously
earning The Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award. Our Gamewarden history
is rich with numerous accounts of meritorious actions and unrivaled dedication
to duty, loyal camaraderie, and teamwork carried out under oft time horrific
conditions. We mourn the loss of our brothers who have preceded us.
Gamewardens of Vietnam have been fulfilled
in honoring their memory, and at the same time preserving our legacy with not
only symbolic representation, but also tangible and awe-inspiring evidence
through our custody agreement of two PBR's (both parade and operational) on
loan to us by the Naval Historical Center, in Washington, D.C. Gamewardens West
Coast Chapter has been admirably represented by participation in many San Diego
area parades and our "parade mode" PBR captured not only spectator awe but
second place honors in last Summer's Coronado 4th of July parade. Similarly,
our "operational" PBR has "seen action" and has thrilled thousands of
television viewers and on-premise audiences in several Fourth of July Naval
Special Warfare Exhibitions in Glorietta Bay.
Last July, Commander, Special Boat Squadron
ONE (CSBR-1), requested approval from the Naval Historical Center to employ
it's use by the Naval Special Warfare Command in COMNAVSPECWARCOM's annual 4th
of July demonstration in Coronado, California. Special Boat Unit-12's
utilization of our PBR in this event provided the public an up front and
personal look of our Gamewarden's past while at the same time served an
impressive connection to the Navy's present Special Warfare capabilities and
strengths.
It is my heartfelt belief that our West
Coast Chapter (as does the entire Gamewarden organization) benefit from the
privilege to perpetuate a public understanding and appreciation of our past
through the embodiment of these two boats consigned to the West Coast Chapter's
provisional custody.
Your West Coast Chapter is holding their
election of new officers at the Naval Amphibious Base, Coronado this coming
July 14 at Turner Field. After the election, we will adjourn to a barbeque. We
won't have a "water buffalo" or any nostalgic beverages like Black Label or
"33" beer to drink, but we'll promise you plenty of good food and drink.
So dust off your "river rat" stories, come
to the July 14 election and picnic and let's have some fun!
As we reflect on our past and look to the
future let us remember our POW/MIA's on April 9, and pay tribute our fallen
brothers and veterans on Memorial Day, which falls on May 28 this year. And
finally, please don't forget the continuing need for any contributions you can
give towards the completion of the Vietnam Unit
Memorial at CISIM Field, Ralph really needs our assistance in this most
worthy of causes.
Respectfully Yours,
Gene Glasco
President, West Coast Chapter
