Lt. Lepak, Ass't. Sec Nav
Shillito. Dog and Pony show. It must have been the last day or the first day
of the month. Visitors didn't pay taxes for earnings during a month they spent
any time in a combat zone. Hence most inspections/visits occurred on the last
day of one month and the first day of the next month. Therefore: two months
worth of "no taxes."

Black Pony, OV 10, photos submitted by: Gary
Moss
narrative: Gary Marker.
|
|
|
|
The Naval Air Museum, here in Pensacola, had a Dedication Ceremony for
an OV-10A Bronco. The aircraft was an actual VAL-4 Black Pony. The co-pilot,
former LTJG Jeff Johnson described how, in this actual aircraft, in support of
ambushed PBR units in the U Minh Forest, in the middle of the diving attack,
received fatal fire through the canopy, killing the pilot,
LT Pete Russell. He
was the first "Black Pony" casualty of the war. This occurred on
25 May
1969.
To all,
LTJG Jeff Johnson pulled the Bronco out of a dive just prior to
crashing. We The Black Ponies were told by PBR crews that the OV-10A Bronco was
at treetop level when Jeff Johnson saved the aircraft from his back seat pilot
position.
With LT Pete Russell KIA, while in the Bronco's front seat,
LTJG Johnson landed at Binh Thuy with our Hero Pete Russell joining many other
Naval Aviators who died with their boots on while fighting the
enemy and
preserving freedom.
